Ben graduated magna cum laude from the University of California, Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Science with departmental honors in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. As an undergraduate he completed three years of bench research and volunteered at a free clinic for uninsured and economically disadvantaged patients. After taking a year off to complete his research (and fit in some travel), he was accepted to four top-ten medical schools and chose to attend Stanford University, where he was awarded a medical scholars research grant and served on curriculum advisory committees. He is now completing his residency in otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat surgery) at the NYU School of Medicine, where he continues to be involved with curriculum planning and residency admissions.
