Have a backup plan for medical school letters of recommendation!

At MedSchoolCoach, we know that letters of recommendation are an important part of your medical school application. They help the admissions committee really get a full picture of who you are inside and outside the classroom. It is an opportunity for others to brag about how good a doctor you can be, but also an opportunity for medical schools to “read between the lines”. A lukewarm letter of recommendation can leave you out the admissions race. One thing that we’ve found happen on occasion is that medical school recommendation letters often fall through the crack. This can happen for a variety of reasons. Professors get sick, go on sabbatical, ignore you, have more important things to do, etc. For this reason, it’s important to have a backup plan. This is why I like to tell students to ask for a minimum of 5-6 letters. You can always not send some and if someone doesn’t come through, it’s not a problem!
