Q: Do I need a different essay for DO and MD Schools? A: Not really, but some modifications can be made

While DO and MD schools differ somewhat on philosophy of educating a physician, the great majority of the curriculum is exactly the same. That said, their admission process is also largely the same. In your personal statement, you should not be referring to a particular type of school you want to attend. Instead, your essay should show a committee why you want to become a physician (not specifically an MD or a DO). Therefore your personal statement can be almost exactly the same. However, many DO schools know they are backups for the majority of applicants, so some do want to see that you have taken the time to understand their philosophy. Therefore we recommend adding a few lines about why the path of an osteopathic physician intrigues you.
