You need to research each BS/MD program you’re applying to in depth. Every program has its own mission, academic philosophy, curriculum structure, and admissions expectations, and those differences should directly shape how you write your essays.
Research both the undergraduate institution and the affiliated medical school. Many applicants focus on one and treat the other as secondary, but BS/MD programs are intentionally built across both environments.
Done well, research helps you make better decisions. You may discover a program that genuinely excites you, or realize one isn’t the right match. Maybe you’ll even decide to explore more traditional pre-med programs. Either way, your writing becomes more focused and intentional.
Start with official sources, like program pages, departmental websites, course catalogs, and faculty profiles. If gaps remain, reach out directly to admissions officers or program contacts for clarification.

My experience with researching programs: In my college years, I wanted to learn more about health policy. Unfortunately, that’s a pretty unique field of study. Not a lot of schools offer an entire major in health policy. The University of Rochester did, though!

There are plenty of books you can get from the library, or sample essays you can find online from students who successfully got into the top programs. The goal isn’t to copy structure or content, but to understand what works and how students connect their experiences to medicine.

Given the number of essays you’ll write for BS/MD programs, you can’t avoid referencing activities from your application, but you also shouldn’t rely on them alone.
Strong essays often include at least one experience that isn’t already listed in your activities section. Some programs even explicitly ask for this. Others imply it by giving broad prompts that invite reflection beyond standard achievements and your favorite extracurricular activity.
I recommend you find one activity that you thoroughly enjoy that isn’t on your resume, and write about it. You’ll differentiate yourself from the crowd in your supplemental essays. The key is to choose something meaningful, even if it’s simple. It might be an activity you do to unwind, a personal habit, or something that reveals how you cope with stress or manage your mental health.
For me, it’s baking. For some people, it might be running or yoga. Regardless, write about why it’s important to you and how it helps you restore your energy and reset your mindset. Think beyond your career in medicine to show direct medical programs a little more about who you are.
A common mistake in admissions essays is getting lost in the story. Students often describe an experience in detail but forget to explain what it reveals about them.
Every narrative element should ultimately serve one purpose: helping the reader understand you more clearly. That doesn’t mean forcing reflection into every sentence, but you’re the main character here.
Plenty of people say they want to work in the medical field, but the stories they tell are so often about other people. With every detail you include in your writing, ask yourself how it relates back to you and how mentioning it will help the reader better understand your perspective.
Background details are still important, but they should support your perspective, not replace it. You are the focus of the essay, not the event itself.
Strong BS/MD essays let the reader see, hear, and feel them. This is where vivid detail and sensory language matter. When appropriate, incorporate the five senses to ground your writing in specific moments. Instead of summarizing an experience, describe it in a way that transports the reader and leaves an impression.
You don’t need to overdo it. Focus on using active verbs, details, analogies, and metaphors that relate to your senses.
Before-and-after examples:
Don’t say:
“I could feel the sun warm on my skin.”
Do say:
“The sun warmed my skin.”
Don’t say:
“I saw children with rashes who just wanted their mom.”
Do say:
“Children scratched their rashes, crying for their mothers.”
Don’t say:
“I love to hear the pop in the microwave. It makes me think about watching movies with mom and dad.”
Do say:
“When the kernels pop in the microwave, my mouth waters, and my head fills with memories of me, mom, and dad burning through Redbox rentals.”
The difference is specificity. Instead of telling the reader how you felt, you show them what was happening in a way that creates emotion and meaning.
Bonus writing tip: Cut out filter words, like “I felt,” “I heard,” and “I see,” when they aren’t necessary. Let the action carry the detail instead.
Strong BS/MD essays interpret experiences. The final layer of your writing should connect what you’ve shared to your broader motivation for medicine.
This connection can show up in several ways:
Reflection is what transforms a story into an application essay. It helps admissions committees understand why your experiences matter in the context of your path toward medicine.
That said, if an experience doesn’t genuinely relate to medicine, don’t force it. Forced links are easy to spot and can weaken an otherwise strong essay. It’s better to leave an experience as a reflection of who you are as a person than to stretch it artificially into a medical narrative.
Once you have an essay draft that answers the prompt and fits within the word count, it’s time to refine it. Editing is where a solid essay becomes a standout one.
At this stage, focus less on adding new ideas and more on sharpening clarity, voice, and impact. These editing tips are what I’ve found to work best in helping to elevate my writing to the next level.
One way to elevate your BS/MD essay is by incorporating thoughtful analogies, metaphors, or references that help your writing stand out. A well-placed comparison can make a moment more memorable and reveal how you think.
Look at your draft and ask:
Strong essays often include moments that stick in the reader’s mind because they reframe ordinary experiences in a fresh way. That said, these should feel natural. If an analogy doesn’t add clarity or personality, it’s better left out.

Even strong content can fall flat if the rhythm feels repetitive. Change it up. Editing for flow means paying attention to how your sentences sound together, not just what they say.
A compelling essay mixes:
You want the essay to feel conversational but still polished, like a thoughtful narrative, but pay attention to transitions. Ideas should connect smoothly so the reader isn’t jolted from one thought to the next. Sometimes this means adding a bridge sentence or reordering paragraphs.
Here’s a good test: Read your essay out loud. If it feels repetitive, choppy, or overly formal, your sentence structure likely needs variety.
This is where you ensure your essay is not only strong in content but clean, consistent, and fully aligned with the prompt.

Responsible AI use can be helpful here, as these tools can assist with grammar, clarity, and word choice suggestions. The final responsibility should always be yours, though. AI can support editing, but it shouldn’t replace your voice.
Editing becomes even more effective when you bring in outside perspectives. After working closely with your essay, it’s easy to overlook gaps, unclear phrasing, or assumptions that make sense to you but not to a reader.
Seek feedback from a small, trusted group, ideally a counselor, teacher, mentor, or someone familiar with the application process. If possible, include at least one person who has successfully navigated BS/MD or pre-med pathways.
The most useful feedback tends to focus on the clarity of your story, voice consistency, how you weave in your motivations for pursuing medicine, and whether your personality comes through. At least one new person should review your final draft to catch any spelling or grammatical mistakes.
Not every suggestion needs to be implemented, especially when it’s at the risk of your own voice. Sometimes, people have personal preferences that they mistake for writing rules. Nevertheless, be grateful they took the time to give you feedback.

I’ve found that these are usually issues with direction, not effort, and they can be easy to overlook when you’re close to your own writing. Being aware of them early can save you from major revisions later and help you keep your essay focused, authentic, and intentional.
