Bio: Hanifa graduated from Swarthmore College with a BA in Sociology and Anthropology. While there, Hanifa won the multi-year Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, founded and led multiple student groups, and worked in the Career Services office, editing resumes and facilitating internship programs for fellow students.
With the Mellon-Mays research grant, Hanifa traveled to Malaysia and New Mexico to do a comparative study of religious pedagogical practices. After graduating from Swarthmore, Hanifa was admitted directly into the doctoral program in Cultural Anthropology at Columbia University. At Columbia, Hanifa earned two graduate degrees and multiple institutional fellowships. Hanifa worked with Columbia students and faculty as a Teaching Assistant for the Anthropology department and a mentor in the university’s student advising office. In the process, she discovered that she wanted more consistent, one-on-one interaction with students and pivoted into higher education administration (academic and student affairs), taking a position as an Academic Advisor at the George Washington University. In that position, Hanifa guided hundreds of students in over 40 majors from first-year orientation to graduation. Since then, Hanifa has been an admissions coach and writing consultant for five years, working closely with clients to help them create compelling and authentic applications that showcase their strengths.
Hanifa is an avid experimental cook who loves to try different cuisines, do innovative things with ordinary ingredients, and create new recipes in the kitchen.
