What Students Say

Bio

Sophia Jackson is a Ph.D. student in materials science and engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Texas at Austin where she studied natural antibacterial materials made from plant-based fibers.

Now, Sophia works with marine cyanobacteria to pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and turn it into solid minerals through a process called microbial-induced carbonate precipitation. She uses this natural process to design sustainable materials that can capture carbon and support coral reef restoration. Her research combines 3D printing, marine biology, and chemistry to build reef-safe structures that mimic the shape and chemistry of real coral. These structures help coral larvae settle and grow, offering hope for rebuilding reefs damaged by climate change.

Sophia hopes to inspire the next generation of students to explore bioinspired solutions that make a real world impact.
