Tanisha Verneus was born and raised in Valley Stream, New York. She matriculated to Brown University for college, as a part of their eight-year baccalaureate-medical degree program. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health and human biology before continuing to Alpert Medical School.
Tanisha first started tutoring younger students while in high school, helping them master their mathematics and science courses. In college, she tutored students for the SAT and mentored those younger than her. Once in medical school, Tanisha’s passion for medical education blossomed. During her first year, she volunteered with multiple student organizations that taught underrepresented preschool and elementary school students in her local community about healthy habits, physiology, and the basics of medical care. During the summer, she served as a course leader for the Summer at Brown program and taught local high school students about health policy, research, and narrative medicine. She was elected to serve on the board of a nonprofit organization whose mission promotes health and wellness using literature and collaborative approaches in schools and in homes.
Despite navigating her own challenges with Step 1, Tanisha excelled during her preclinical years and third year of medical school, honoring multiple rotations. She was selected to be a peer tutor for pre-clerkship students and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society chapter at her institution. She hopes to use her experience to empower other students who may face setbacks and motivate them to persevere. As a first-generation and underrepresented minority student, she understands how challenging it can be to navigate medical school and board exams, and is motivated to use her experiences and knowledge to help those who come after her. She hopes to incorporate medical education into her future career and looks forward to supporting students as they work to reach their full potential. In her free time, Tanisha enjoys reading memoirs, practicing yoga, and putting together puzzles.
