Dr. Matthew Tukel completed Wayne State University’s BS/MD program, earning his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is board-certified in ophthalmology and is completing an ASOPRS-accredited oculofacial plastic surgery fellowship at Consultants in Ophthalmic and Facial Plastic Surgery in Michigan, with expected completion in 2027.

Dr. Tukel served for four years on Wayne State’s medical school admissions committee, where he reviewed applications, interviewed candidates, and voted on admissions decisions. His involvement gave him direct experience with how committees assess applicants’ preparation, experiences, and motivations for pursuing medicine.

During residency and fellowship, he has also interviewed candidates for ophthalmology residency and oculoplastics fellowship programs. This experience across multiple stages of medical training informs his advising, while his own path through a combined BS/MD program provides a personal perspective for high school students considering an accelerated route to medicine.

Dr. Tukel’s surgical interests include functional and cosmetic facial plastic surgery, particularly procedures involving the areas around the eyes, the forehead, and complex orbital reconstruction. He brings his clinical background and admissions experience to his work supporting the next generation of physicians.
