Bio

Dr. Michael Duffy graduated from Northwestern University, earning dual bachelor’s degrees in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. From there Michael worked in machine design and manufacturing serving the medical device, consumer product, and space and defense industries. Michael then moved to Germany for two years to complete his master’s at RWTH Aachen University, where his thesis focused on the mathematical modeling of bone biology. He then returned to the United States and developed next-generation total joint arthroplasties at Massachusetts General Hospital. Following his time in R&D, Michael returned to academic research, completing a PhD at Columbia University studying bone mechanotransduction and how it contributes to osteoporosis and bone metastasis. Currently, at the University of Pennsylvania, Michael studies bone marrow biology and aging utilizing single-cell and bioinformatic techniques alongside ex vivo studies with human biospecimens.

Fun Fact

When out of the lab, Dr. Duffy spends time as an amateur motorcycle mechanic, preparing for his next adventure. The last one took him on a riding and camping trip around the Great Lakes.
