Elizabeth “Liz” Martin first started writing when she was eight years old and her mom gave her a journal for her birthday. As an adult, she earned her BA in English and theatre arts at Hartwick College, where she lived in a cabin in the woods at the school’s environmental campus. After graduating, she moved to the New York City metro area, working as a journalist and managing editor for a small, weekly newspaper for five years. She is the recipient of two New Jersey Press Association awards for her journalism, and her creative writing has been published in numerous literary journals. Liz also worked as a freelance medical copyeditor.
Liz went on to earn her MFA in creative and professional writing from William Paterson University. She eventually began teaching at Montclair State University, and is currently the Assistant Director of First-Year Writing. She helps oversee a general education program that serves all 4,000 incoming students. Additionally, because there was a need in the department, she began teaching a technical writing and communication class and a writing in the sciences course for undergraduate STEM majors several years ago. She has found both of these subjects fascinating and challenging. As a result, she pursued a graduate certificate in science writing at John Hopkins.
Liz helps clients be as clear and specific in their writing as possible. She also pushes them to think critically about their own experiences and what these moments have meant to them. Additionally, because of her background in journalism and science writing, she helps clients write about their research experience and clinical work in accessible ways. She lives with her spouse and son in Northern New Jersey, where they enjoy hiking, camping, and cycling.
