Dr. Pothen graduated magna cum laude from The College of William & Mary in Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Upon graduating, he was awarded a Fulbright grant and spent a year in India conducting community health research. He then attended Emory University School of Medicine where he became Emory’s first MD/PhD student to earn a PhD in the field of sociology. While there, he served for five years on the MD/PhD program’s admissions committee, conducting interviews, reviewing application materials, and voting on admissions decisions. He also spent a year with the Emory Writing Center where he worked with medical school applicants on their personal and research statements.
Dr. Pothen has extensive teaching experience and has informally advised dozens of medical school and MD/PhD applicants. He is now a second-year psychiatry resident at the Medical University of South Carolina’s rural track psychiatry residency in Orangeburg.

Dr. Pothen loves to scuba dive. He has spent time underwater in the Florida Keys, San Diego, and the Georgia Aquarium (with the whale sharks).
