Amira Collison was born in Silver Springs, Maryland. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Maryland Honors Program with a degree in Neurobiology & Physiology and a minor in Spanish Languages & Cultures. During her time at the University of Maryland, her strong interest in social justice and community involvement particularly focused on bettering the quality of health and education for underrepresented minorities, led her and a fellow classmate to develop the Foundation in Science and Health (FISH) program. FISH was designed to help students from low-income backgrounds with the support necessary to pursue higher education in science and health programs. Over the course of college, she devoted over four hundred hours to serving as a student coordinator and tutor for the program. She also worked as a teaching assistant for upper-division biology courses. While working with students to both improve their understanding of the material and motivate them towards success, she was delighted to find something in herself – a passion for education. This passion drew her to become a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Spain, a country whose language, culture, and history she had studied and fell in love with it from an early age.
After teaching high school courses in Spain for a year, Amira began medical school at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In medical school, she continued to teach, mentor, and advise high school and undergraduate students by volunteering in a number of programs including BASE, HPREP, Merit, and Latino Leaders in Training Mentorship Program. She scored 250+ on both Step 1 and Step 2, and received Honors in all clinical rotations, with the exception of one High Pass. At MedSchoolCoach, Amira has combined her 9+ years of teaching experience and strong medical/clinical knowledge to provide students with the test-taking skills, medical knowledge, and self-confidence necessary to excel on their USMLE and Shelf exams.
Amira is currently a PGY-1 Psychiatry resident at UCLA. In her free time, she enjoys going to the beach, exploring the beautiful city of LA, playing the piano, and mindfulness meditation!
