Dr. Maureen McBride has earned a B.A., M.A., and PhD. in writing and the teaching of writing and has earned an M.S. in equity and diversity in education. Initially, Maureen was interested in studying journalism, but did not like how much the field was driven by advertising. Once she took her first course focused on composition and rhetoric in graduate school, she was hooked. Maureen studied all forms of writing, and then began to specialize in the teaching of writing, the teaching of literacy, collaboration as it relates to literacy, writing assessment, affective dimensions of writing, professional mentoring, and writing center work. During this time, she also wrote for her school newspaper, volunteered with a local literacy center for recent U.S. immigrants/refugees, and tutored community members to help them learn to read. She wrote a memoir in her first master’s degree.
Maureen has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and regularly participates in research about the teaching of reading and writing. Additionally, she collaboratively runs a specialized program between faculty and students and her center with a colleague at her university, which is a R1 institution. She has worked in higher education for eighteen years helping students develop their writing skills so they can achieve their personal and professional goals.
