Bio

Maureen C. Scudder is a college counselor, freelance writer, teacher, tutor, and communications consultant. She has worked in education for 30 years. For the past 20, she has worked as a professor of English, communications, and English to speakers of other languages. She has also worked as a school marketing and communications director and educational consultant.

Maureen is certified in Connecticut to teach English grades 7-12, TESOL K-12, and TESOL for adults. She taught English in CT, Indonesia, and South Africa. She worked as the Writing Center Coordinator at the University of Saint Joseph, where she specialized in tutoring nursing papers, and as an adjunct both online and on-ground at the University of Saint Joseph, Post University, and Tunxis Community College. She was a House Director at Miss Porter’s School and was the Director of Communications, Diversity, and Community Relations at The Cobb School, Montessori and the Director of Communications at Northwest Catholic High School.

Maureen earned her B.A. in English with concentrations in history and fine arts from Siena College. She then earned an M.A. in Africana studies from the University of Albany, and an M.A. in English from Trinity College. Her interests are especially deep in anti-racism and protest literature. Beyond this work, she has completed coursework in human development and family studies at the University of Connecticut.

Maureen meets each client with curiosity, warmth, and the belief that they will go to medical school. When reviewing personal statements, activities descriptions, secondaries, and resumes, she calls on her decades of teaching experience and skills as a writer. She demonstrates how to fix errors, “cut the fat,” turn a phrase, and get the job done. Understanding that admissions readers are busy, she helps clients stand out and show their chops.

Fun Fact

Maureen owned a 32-foot RV and spent summers traveling the US with her husband and four young children. She misses that motorhome, but she also knows her crazy tall teenagers would exceed the weight limit today!
