What Students Say

Bio

Tim Carr, MFA, is a professional tutor at the Villanova University writing center, assisting undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff. He first became interested in English because his father was dyslexic, and his mother enjoyed reading and discussing books. Both of his parents encouraged him to pursue this path. He now guides writers in their coursework, applications for Truman and Fulbright scholarships, and graduate and medical school applications. Tim also teaches reading and writing courses at Villanova.

Tim attended Sarah Lawrence College for his MFA in creative nonfiction. During this time, he worked on an art criticism essay under the direction of Rachel Cohen. This was his first attempt at such an essay, led by someone who had published many essays of the type, including the New Yorker, and elsewhere. This eventually let to his essays being published in literary journals, such as The Threepenny Review.

At the core of his educational philosophy, Tim provides pragmatic tools and specific feedback to help writers understand how and why they are making choices. He tries to separate the complicated process into steps that may be individually tackled yet still cohere as one project—argumentative content, structure, writing proportions, sentence-types, and polishing. The rationale of this process is to methodically remain dedicated to one fundamental goal before tackling the next, even when it is tempting to, for example, worry over word choice from the start. Ultimately, he wants those he assists to enjoy these challenging pursuits and achievements.

Education

Undergraduate: Lebanon Valley College
Graduate: Rowan University; Sarah Lawrence College
