Artificial intelligence is a multi-faceted concept encompassing machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, natural language processing (NLP), data science, predictive analytics, and even robotics.

Ultimately, all these aspects of AI can benefit healthcare systems and patient health outcomes. However, some question the ethics of certain AI practices.

Patient permission and AI accountability are ethical questions that need answering as we integrate the use of this powerful tool in our field — not to mention how ChatGPT has the ability to write entire medical school applications.

Below, we’ll discuss applications of AI in healthcare, its advantages, and the potential downsides.

How AI Is Currently Being Implemented

AI is already being utilized in the following ways:

  • Automated communications: AI is already automating certain aspects of communications and basic telemedicine between patients, clinicians, and administrators.

  • Structuring clinical trials: AI may help formulate clinical trial subject and structure, as well as compiling all relevant scientific literature to cite and build upon.
  • Recruiting: AI is used to find and recruit individuals for clinical trials.
  • Text generation: For better or for worse, AI can compose entire application essays or personal statements. I recommend only using AI for suggesting edits to your original writing, to avoid ethical and quality issues with your med school or residency applications.
  • Public health: AI should be able to improve public health surveillance, productivity, communications, and epidemiological research. Of course, when it comes to public health, experts warn of several potential challenges — data privacy, digital infrastructure needs, workforce skill, and equity of use across areas of different status.

In the future, doctors and researchers hope that AI can play a larger role in drug discovery, basic telehealth, reliable diagnosis, and healthcare cost reduction.

Benefits

There are many potential benefits of AI solutions in healthcare. Artificial intelligence can do things quickly and on a large scale. It may take humans several minutes to read a medical research paper, but AI can read the entire library of scientific literature in a short period of time.

Some benefits of artificial intelligence in healthcare include:

  • Faster, more holistic diagnosis and disease prevention.
  • More effective and less expensive remote telemedicine.
  • Quicker, more comprehensive administrative tasks completed.
  • Less time-consuming note-taking from doctors and nurses.
  • Faster creation of and recruitment for clinical trials.
  • More help writing and editing med school application essays.
  • Less human error. 

Should you use ChatGPT to help with your medical school application? Yes, you should use ChatGPT to help — but not to write for you. Chatbots can provide diverse ideas for jumping off points, editing your work for grammar and punctuation, or helping overcome writer’s block.

Let’s go into detail with some of these benefits.

Administrative Efficiency

A big benefit of AI in healthcare is increased administrative efficacy. How many billions of hours are spent on data entry and looking up information? AI should be able to complete many administrative tasks in a fraction of the time and typically with less margin of error.

AI can increase efficiency of healthcare organizations and electronic health record systems (EHRs) clinical workflows, communications, and financial operations. Improved efficiency may increase revenue and allow for lower cost to patients.

Also, AI tools like ChatGPT or Jasper help compose communications with patients and healthcare workers. In a live healthcare setting, quick text composition can also result in rapid patient care, allowing patients to chat with intelligent healthcare bots about symptoms, treatments.

Real-world example: AI-powered medical scribes can automate the transcription of patient visits into clinical practice notes, saving physicians significant time spent on documentation and allowing them to focus on higher quality and quantity of patient care.

Predictive Analytics & Faster Insights

AI predictive modeling and machine learning algorithms can help healthcare organizations find real insights more quickly and help with real-time clinical decision support.

Natural language processing may help get those insights to doctors or patients faster. In turn, patient outcomes will improve.

AI can be used as a tool to predict patient risk factors, hospital readmissions, or disease progression. A human should ultimately review these predictions, but AI can provide these insights for human physicians to utilize.

A radiology-specific use case: AI decision-making has been shown to outperform radiologists in identifying malignant tumors.

Telehealth, Monitoring & Virtual Assistance

AI can automate many aspects of communication and telemedicine between patients, physicians, and administrative staff. Healthcare delivery should be more cost effective than ever through the application of artificial intelligence.

AI even enables remote patient monitoring, making remote medicine more effective and less cost-burdensome.

We must maintain the human element of healthcare, but if AI can greatly reduce the cost of patient care, that means more people are getting treatment and much-needed remote monitoring.

Real world example: AI-powered remote patient monitoring devices can remotely monitor a patient at high risk of COPD for early warning signs of complications. Early reporting can save a patient thousands of dollars or even their life.

Connecting Disparate Data

Clinical data is fragmented in different formats, but AI machine learning technologies bring together different healthcare data to build a more unified picture for the individuals represented by that medical data.

Connecting different data in all its many formats should improve accurate diagnoses, treatment plans, and health outcomes.

To put it all in context, AI software can read, organize, and interpret data that would take a single human being multiple lifetimes just to read. This is accomplished in minutes, not years.

A real-life example: Instead of relying on manual data entry or coding, which can be inconsistent and in disparate formats, AI and natural language processing (NLP) can automate the process of extracting, standardizing, and integrating crucial information from across different sources.

Concerns and Ethical Dilemmas

There are risks and downsides to the adoption of AI in healthcare. Let’s look at some specific concerns below.

A growing issue in the healthcare sector is that more and more med school applicants are using ChatGPT to fill out applications, write personal statements, and compose secondaries. AI recognition software will continue to improve and weed out students who don’t submit their own work. Med schools are not looking for what a chatbot would say about you; they want to hear your voice.

Should you use ChatGPT to help with your medical school application? No, you should not use ChatGPT to write application essays because AI chatbots don’t understand your personal stories that led to your passion for becoming a doctor. AI isn’t authentic or empathetic. It’s unethical.

Potential Errors & Lack of Accountability

A huge concern with the use of AI in healthcare is potential errors although, of course, human error also exists. Perhaps a unique issue with AI error is the lack of accountability. As in, you can’t fire an AI system or hold them accountable for mistakes like you could a human being.

AI tools are definitely known to be wrong — AKA hallucinating — and patient harm may result. Artificial intelligence could recommend the wrong prescription, fail to recognize a growth in imaging, or base guidance on racially-biased data collection.

In my medical opinion, a big problem I see is that AI could be trained on some outdated data. If AI has learned from incorrect information, it could easily produce incorrect results, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations.

If these AI tools become widespread, potential AI system errors could result in thousands of injuries — rather than a more limited number of injuries caused by a single healthcare provider’s error.

Who is accountable if an AI-enabled recommendation leads to harm — the clinician, the hospital, or the developer? Generally, the clinician or the hospital is still held accountable in cases of AI recommendations that lead to negative outcomes.

Transparency

Artificial intelligence never stops collecting information, but people are usually unaware that their data is being collected for machine learning purposes. There is very little legally-required transparency in AI, and hopefully that changes in the near future.

Yes, we sign away our rights to privacy with all those terms and conditions that we sign sight unseen. Data collection guidelines are often buried in user agreements. But that doesn’t mean patients have no ethical right to know when AI is being used.

Transparency in how AI-assisted models are trained would increase trust by hospitals, companies, and organizations disclosing when collected data has been used to create a tool, application, or message automation.

Individuals who use AI tools to compose a business email, a personal essay on a med school application, or a patient communication, seldom disclose that AI technology is being used. Ethically speaking, disclosing when AI is used benefits everyone, especially in healthcare.

Loss of Human Connection

AI may bring about a loss of individuality or a loss of human connection that we’ve already started to witness. When people rely on AI to answer their questions instead of human physicians or coworkers, the human element is slowly lost.

When communications — for example, between doctor and patient, or administrator and nurse — are automated and AI-generated, a loss of humanity can worsen the recipient’s comprehension or even their health outcome. AI could make provider communications feel less human and individualized. AI may weaken trust between payers and healthcare professionals.

Medical school applicants who use AI to generate essays or applications may lose a sense of individuality crucial to standing out. Med students who use AI to write content may be perceived as robotic or lacking passion.

Finally, AI could risk physicians listening to AI over the patient, which would impact trust and increase the risk of severe health outcomes. Many doctors already struggle to listen to their patients holistically, but AI could worsen this problem.

Bias & Equity

If AI is trained on biased data, it will almost certainly spit out biased recommendations.

Even though they don’t mean to be, many doctors have implicit racial biases that seep into patient care. Unfortunately — again, even if they aren’t biased on purpose — doctors may change how they communicate with or treat a patient based on race.

Algorithms may perpetuate such systemic bias if they’re trained on non-representative datasets. This could increase disparities instead of reducing them.

Wealthier communities have more access to healthcare resources. Though AI could, in theory, increase access to healthcare in lower-income communities, we must be wary not to perpetuate today’s disparities — since AI is trained on data from the past and present.

Considerations for Med School Applicants and Students

It’s tempting to let ChatGPT fill out your whole med school or residency application, isn’t it? I must recommend you avoid ChatGPT for actual writing of any essay. However, you may utilize AI and chatbots for brainstorming and editing suggestions.

Let’s talk about some of the biggest considerations for medical school applicants and students when it comes to AI.

Gain a Strong Understanding of AI Fundamentals

Start with the basics. Here’s a list of topics you can research to gain a fundamental understanding of artificial intelligence:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Literally speaking, AI is computer systems that perform tasks that typically require human intelligence (reasoning, perception, learning, decision-making). Look up the difference between generative AI and other AI.
  • Machine Learning (ML): This is a subset of AI where algorithms learn from data to make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed.
  • Deep Learning: This is a subset of ML using neural networks (especially convolutional and transformer-based architectures) to process complex inputs like images, sound, or text.
  • Large Language Models (LLMs): These are tools like ChatGPT and Med-PaLM trained on text data for summarization, reasoning, or patient communication.
  • How AI is used in medicine: Reading this article is a great start! Above, we’ve talked about how AI is used in diagnostics, treatment, prevention, telemedicine, clinical trials, and so much more.
  • Ethics of AI: Look up reputable articles on the ethics of using AI in the healthcare field. Again, this article is a great start! I would emphasize the importance of human oversight and accountability when it comes to applying AI to medical practices.

Learn to Think Critically About the Ethics

It’s essential for aspiring and current physicians to consider and weigh potential ethical scenarios regarding AI in healthcare. It will help with applying to medical school, going through med school and residency, and working as a doctor.

Familiarize yourself with the four pillars of medical bioethics: autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, justice. Think critically about how these bioethical principles apply to the use of AI models.

For instance, AI should not be able to override a patient’s wishes for treatment, as doing so would violate the ethical principle of autonomy — a patient’s right to make their own choices about their care. 

Another example: AI may recommend surgery because it produces the best long-term outcomes in the literature, even though surgery might be unnecessarily invasive for the patient’s condition. This could violate the principle of non-maleficence — AKA “do no harm.”

Prepare for Potential Interview Questions

There will probably be interview questions regarding AI in healthcare and medical education that you need to be prepared to answer in an interview for med school or residency.

Here are a few example interview questions about AI in healthcare:

  • How do you see AI shaping patient care in the next decade?
  • What ethical considerations should guide AI use in medicine?
  • When do you think it’s acceptable to use AI in med school?

AI-based tools can improve patient education materials by personalizing content, increasing accessibility, and simplifying complex information. There’s a lot that AI can do instantly and at almost no cost, such as communicating with patients in a plain, personalized manner. 

Although AI-driven technology is not expected to replace many jobs — instead automating tasks to streamline existing jobs — there may soon be lower demand or fewer positions available for the following healthcare jobs because of AI:

  • Medical coders and billers
  • Medical transcriptionists
  • Patient service representative
  • Laboratory technologists
  • Pathologists
  • Radiologists
  • Various administrators

The medical community needs to build effective and trustworthy AI health systems by prioritizing transparency, human accountability, and ethical considerations.

It will take a lot of health data and medical records. It will take time to work out the kinks. It will take a lot of honesty and trust to make the patient experience even better than it is now. But it is possible to make healthcare more trusted, more accessible, and even better through AI.

Without question, artificial intelligence will benefit the future of healthcare, especially if we implement these tools with great care. Human error and human inefficiency will decrease while data collection and processing will better serve both patients and medical professionals.

However, humans and organizations using AI tools need to be more transparent and very conscious of the ethics of AI.

AI will not make healthcare perfect. Though AI will most likely improve the healthcare industry and patient care while reducing costs, everyone must be wary of big tech companies, startup companies, healthcare organizations, regulatory bodies, and policymakers promising perfection instead of simply a new status quo.
